The mighty Kelowna Rockets are about to blast off into the Memorial Cup stratosphere. A win tonight over Calgary will give the Rockets a sweep of the once mighty Hitmen, who won 17 of their last 20 regular-season games and won the Scotty Munro trophy with 122 points.
Calgary won 12 straight games in that run before a 2-1 loss -- to Kelowna -- brought the Hitmen back to Earth.
In the playoffs, Calgary ran the table against Edmonton, Lethbridge and Brandon before meeting the Rockets, who not only have the Hitmen on the brink of elimination, but have outscored Calgary 10-3.
There's something to be said for being challenged every game. Kelowna had some tough games against Kamloops in the first round, and were pushed to six games by the Americans, who simply ran out of healthy players down the stretch. Vancouver also took the Rockets to six games in the Western Conference finals.
When the Rockets step on the ice in Rimouski, Quebec, for their first Memorial Cup game May 15 (sorry Calgary, but I just don't see you storming back to knock off Kelowna), they can thank those teams which challenged them at every turn and made sure they were the best team to represent the WHL.
