UW golfer ranks as world's No. 1 amateur

British Columbia continues to help raise the profile of University of Washington athletics.

Earlier this month, it was Langley's Danielle Lawrie pitching the Huskies to the NCAA women's softball championship.

Earlier this spring, Darren Wallace, another junior from Langley, was medalist at the men's Pac-10 Conference Golf Championships. He and teammate Nick Taylor — from Abbotsford -- helped the Huskies win the Pac-10 team title. Taylor also earned the school's first Pac-10 Player of the Year award. Click here for video that I shot of Taylor's comments during media day for the Pac-10 golf championships.

This week, it's Taylor again. The 21-year-old is No. 1 in the Royal & Ancient's World Amateur Golf Ranking. The junior All-American recently ripped up Suncadia in Rosyln to the tune of a 6-under 136 total to qualify for his second U.S. Open. His medalist performance at that sectional moved him to the top of the poll.

Taylor tees off at Bethpage Black today at 9:41 a.m. PDT. He made the cut at the 2008 Canadian Open, and much of Canada -- as well as UW golf fans -- will be following his play this week.
