WSU product Darling set to start for NFL's Chiefs

The Kansas City Star is reporting that WSU product Devard Darling appears poised to start the regular season as the Kansas City Chiefs' No. 2 wide receiver.

Their opener is Sept. 7 at New England.

Dwayne Bowe will attract the opposition's best cover man each week, which bodes well for Darling, a third-round draft pick in 2004 by the Baltimore Ravens. He had 18 TD catches in his career for the Cougars. He's only made 20 receptions total in the NFL, 18 of them came last season for the Ravens.

If something happens to KC starting QB Brodie Croyle, then Darling could be hooking up with a Husky — Damon Huard.

Earlier this week, the Star published a feature on Darling. It details why he transferred to WSU in 2001 -- the death of his twin brother, Devaughn, in the Florida State locker room. They were freshmen.

Darling told the Star his family's lawsuit vs. FSU has been stuck in Florida state claims court for seven years.

Meanwhile, the chances of recent WSU product Michael Bumpus making the Seahawks Opening Day roster seem to be improving.

Injuries to Deion Branch and Bobby Engram have bumped Bumpus up the depth chart.

There's Courtney Taylor at the spot opposite Nate Burleson, and Bumpus is third behind Taylor. No. 3 behind Burleson is Jordan Kent from Oregon.

The Seahawks open their season in Buffalo on Sept. 7.
