Democratic donor running for Rep. Sommers’ seat

Seattle’s Reuven Carlyle, a regular donor to Democratic candidates and a member of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, has filed a candidate registration form to run for the House seat occupied by longtime state Rep. Helen Sommers, D-Seattle.

Sommers, the Legislature’s most tenured member, is widely respected in Olympia for her no nonsense ways in crafting the House version of the state budget. There’s been speculation in recent months that retirement may not be too far off.

Sommers also drawn fire from the left at times and in 2004 fought back a tough Democratic challenge from Alice Woldt, who was heavily supported by the Service Employees International Union.

You can read about Carlyle’s professional background here.

Carlyle and his wife have contributed more than $15,000 since the beginning of the 2000 election cycle to various Democratic and nonpartisan campaigns at the state and local level. They’ve contributed another $16,000 since the beginning of the 1998 election cycle to Democratic candidates and causes at the federal level.

Among his many contributions were $100 to Sommers’ 2004 campaign and $50 to her 2006 campaign.

For what it’s worth, both are deploying the services of the same treasurer, Jason Bennett. Carlyle also has retained the services of Democratic consultant Christian Sinderman.
