Coming Monday: Alaska’s Cartoon Laureate

Have a certain fondness for snowmen, large bears and animal jokes?

Then a new cartoon strip that debuts in the Herald on Monday likely will appeal to you.

Tundra was created by Chad Carpenter, the only cartoonist ever to simultaneously be both the Cartoon Laureate of Alaska and the 2008 winner of Newspaper Panel of the Year at the annual National Cartoonist Society’s meeting.

So how hot is that? So hot he got to hug both Lynn Johnston, the creator of For Better or For Worse, and Mike Peters, famous for his Mother Goose & Grimm strip.

Alaska gave Carpenter a fancy certificate just so it could brag about its native son, though the wording seems to indicate his time as its Cartoon Laureate was good only “for 2008.”

Should Alaska have given him a multi-year term?

You can judge for yourself every day on the Herald’s comics pages. Or if you’re the impatient sort, you could check out the Tundra Gallery, labeled “A collection of fine cartoon art you won’t be seeing at your local museum sometime soon.”

Tundra is replacing F Minus. We flunked it out after a five-month run and a cool reception from readers.

We’re considering other changes as well. Have a comic you wish the Herald had? Leave a suggestion in the comment box at the bottom of this blog.
