The Tri-Cities Wine Festival turns 31 this year with a whole new look, new location and an expanded list of seminars and wines to taste.
The festival will be held Nov. 6-7 at the spacious and elegant Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick. Tickets go on sale today. To order, go to www.tricitieswinefestival.com.
On Nov. 6, enjoy gourmet cuisine and fine Northwest wines during a wine and food pairing seminar at 6:30 p.m. at the convention center. The cost is $85 per person. For details on the menu, go to the festival website and look for "2009 Events Schedule."
Nov. 7 is a busy day with four educational seminars followed by the public tasting of all the judged wines that evening.
Two morning seminars run from 10:30 a.m. to noon:
-- The Wine Aisle Mystery -- Wine Pairing on a Budget with sommelier Christopher Sagadin of Yoke's Fresh Markets in West Richland. The cost is $20.
-- Acid and Wine -- The "why" with Wade Wolfe, co-owner of Thurston Wolfe Winery. Learn why acid is important and why and how a winemaker changes the levels. The cost is $40.
The afternoon seminars run from 1:30 to 3 p.m.:
-- Scent-Sational -- Learn to identify aromas and flavors in wines with Kerry Ringer, Washington State University assistant professor and extension enologist, and Richard Larsen, WSU adjunct professor. Cost is $35.
-- Northwest Tempranillo -- Join Earl Jones, founder of Oregon's Abacela Winery, the birthplace of tempranillo plantings in the Northwest, to learn what this grape can do. The cost is $30.
The public tasting runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 7. This is your chance to sample more than 300 judged Northwest wines while snacking on appetizers and enjoying live music. With more space at the convention center comes more food options, industry-related vendors and a larger silent auction. The cost is $60.
