Food for Thought: Contests turn up the heat

By Loretto J. Hulse, Herald staff writer

Have a tasty fresh salsa recipe or tastebuds of steel? Consider entering one or both of the contests planned for Pasco's annual Fiery Foods Festival on Sept. 12-13.

On Sept. 12 there will be a salsa contest with judging at 11 a.m. followed by public tasting at 12:30 p.m. Scrip will be sold to exchange for salsa samples.

Entry forms for the salsa contest are available online at www.pascofieryfoods.com, click on "contests." Entries are due by Aug. 29. For more information, call Gloria Garcia, 545-0738 or 539-3835.

Organizers also are planning a jalapeño pepper-eating contest. You must be 18 or older to participate. More information and an entry form can be found at the website above or call Maricela Razo or Vanesa Algarin at 545-0738.

The street festival will be held at Lewis Street and Fourth Avenue in Pasco. There will be a variety of specialty food booths, prepared foods, arts and crafts, produce, a children's area and entertainment.

Is it ready?

The problem: The recipe says to grill over medium heat. But your grill is charcoal, not gas, which has a temperature control.

Here's a solution from Pillsbury.com: Once the coals are about 75 percent ash gray, place your hand, palm side down, near but not touching the grill rack. If you can keep your hand there for two seconds, the temperature is high; three seconds is medium-high; four seconds is medium; five seconds is low.

Food, wine and music

White Heron Cellars, on Highway 28 between Quincy and Wenatchee, is holding a Bread, Cheese and Cured Meat Festival from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday. Nosh on food while listening to the reggae/rock music of Passing Liberty.

The food vendors include: Vinman's Bakery from Ellensburg with a variety of freshly baked breads and treats. Alpine Lakes Cheese from Leavenworth will have an assortment of hard and soft farmstead goat cheeses. Visconti's restaurant in Leavenworth and Wenatchee will have a variety of cured and smoked meats.

Admission is $10. For more, go to www.whiteheronwine.com or call 509-797-9463.
