Are you or someone you know fired up over cooking?
If so -- and if you happen to put out fires for a living -- the McIlhenny Co., maker of Tabasco hot sauces, has a contest for you.
The fifth annual Cook & Ladder Competition is open to firefighters nationwide -- fulltime and volunteer.
There are six categories -- appetizers, soups, salads, entres, side dishes and desserts. Recipes must be original and include at least one of the company's six pepper sauces.
Entries will be judged on originality and creativity, taste, use of Tabasco sauce, recipe clarity and presentation.
Top prize is $10,000 to be divided evenly between the contestant and his/her firehouse. Ten finalists will be chosen to participate in a cook-off in New York City next year.
There's just one catch -- entries are due by Oct. 31. Entry forms and contest rules are available at www.tabasco.com. Print it out, attach your recipe and a photo of the completed dish and drop it in the mail quick.
Markets closing
Saturday is the last day of the year for many of the farmers markets in the Mid-Columbia including those in Pasco, Ephrata and Moses Lake.
The Walla Walla Farmers Market will close for the season with an End of Harvest Festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
