Take tour of gourmet shops in Victoria

By Loretto J. Hulse, Herald staff writer

VICTORIA, British Columbia -- If you or someone you know enjoys fine foods, brews and wines, hop in the car and head for Victoria.

Travel With Taste, a tour company, will be offering guided culinary walking tours of the city's finest gourmet shops.

Sip, slurp and chomp your way about the city sampling cheeses, tea, meats and pte, chocolate, special sweets and a little wine too.

Tours meet at 11 a.m. each Saturday from May through September at Silk Road Tea in Chinatown. Each tour lasts three to four hours.

Preregistration is required by calling 250-385-1527. For more information on other culinary Canadian tours, go to www.travelwithtaste.com.

After taking one of these tours, drop by the majestic Fairmont Empress Hotel. The famous hotel turns 100 this year and is offering a series of special events to mark the event.

One of them is a special Centennial Tea service each Friday through Sept. 26. This is in addition to the hotel's famous afternoon tea held daily in the lobby.

The Centennial Tea is served at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. in two intimate locations in the sprawling hotel. Choose from either The Empress Harbourside Room with its scenic view of the harbor or the hotel library with its carved ceilings and ivy-covered windows.

The service begins with a glass of sparkling wine followed by a selection of gourmet sandwiches and pastries, a cup of centennial blend tea and a commemorative gift.
