Eclectic Approach ready for another boat race party

By Bethany Lee, Herald staff writer

With their third record in the works, the funky Tri-City-based hip-hop group Eclectic Approach is ready to party boat race weekend.

The group performed last year at the Pasco Red Lion during hydro week. This year, they will be at the Kennewick Red Lion, along with a live DJ for a 21-and-up dance party. The show starts at 9 p.m. July 26.

"We've kept the tradition the last two years," said guitarist Ryan Jander, 25. "We'd like to keep the tradition for sure."

This year, Jander said the band's goal is to connect people -- whether it's the locals, friends who are back in town for the summer or people who come to town just for the races.

"We're going to have lights, a big sound system and drink specials," Jander said. "I like seeing all my friends that I haven't seen and all the cute girls. Just going out having a good time. Boat race parties are always good -- every year it's a rager."

Fans will get to hear Let's Play Tonight, a track off their new album, which still is being recorded. They hope to have it completed and ready for distribution by December.

"This is a real big show for us," Jander said. "We have a great deal worked out, so hopefully if this show is successful, we'll be able to get everything we need to go out on the road and tour -- try to represent Tri-Cities and keep Eclectic Approach going."

The six-man band moved to Seattle this year to work on their third album, which is being produced by Justin Armstrong. He also has worked on albums for Dave Matthews Band, Peter Frampton and Death Cab for Cutie.

"We're excited with what we're coming up with," Jander said. "It's by far the best and most creative stuff we've ever came with. The people who like both of our albums will definitely like what they're gonna hear. It's definitely got a real funky, soul kind of twist to it, while we've still got the hip-hop flavor. Also, it's got a little more rock element to it this time. Trying to keep it eclectic."

Once the album is out, the guys plan to go on tour, focusing on college campuses.

"It's the first time we're in the same town writing as a band, so it's definitely a brand new experience," Jander said. "We've got a good vibe happening."

Tickets cost $15 and can be bought at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/36242, at the Kennewick Red Lion starting July 25 or at the door.
