Wallula Junction fire 80 percent contained

By the Herald staff

A fire near Wallula Junction continued to burn Sunday, but is largely under control, officials said.

About 110 firefighters were working to extinguish the blaze that has scorched about 300 acres between Highway 12 and the Walla Walla River.

Crews had the fire about 80 percent contained and planned to burn out some of the brush along North Shore Road, said Gay Ernst, director of Walla Walla County Emergency Management. The fire was expected to be fully contained by Tuesday.

The blaze, which is suspected to be human-caused, started about 11:30 a.m. Saturday. It was nearly fully contained after burning about 100 acres, but grew when afternoon winds caused it to jump the river.

Crews from Walla Walla Fire Districts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8; College Place Fire Department; Franklin Fire District 3; a Benton County wildfire strike team; and the U.S. Department of Fish & Wildlife battled the fire.

No buildings were threatened.
