A Pateros couple will row through the Tri-Cities today as part of a 25-day fundraiser for March of Dimes and the University of Washington Medical Center's neonatal intensive care unit.
Carlene Anders' and Gene Dowers' stop at Richland's Howard Amon Park is their 19th as part of the more than 500-mile rowing trip that began at the Canadian border on the Columbia River and is scheduled to end next week at Washington State University's boathouse.
The couple's son, Danny, was born prematurely, weighing 1 pound, 10 ounces. He spent nearly four months at UW Medical Center.
The couple says many of the procedures and treatments that kept him alive were the result of the kind of research funded by March of Dimes.
Danny, now 5, and his 12-year-old sister are following their parent's trip and meet them at every stop.
The couple, who were members of the Cougar Crew Team while students at WSU, are hoping to raise more than $10,000.
Donations can be made out to March of Dimes and mailed to P.O. Box 295, Pateros, WA 98846.
