Walla Walla firefighters battle boat, grass fires

Walla Walla County firefighters battled grass fires near Dodd Road and a boat fire at Hood Park on Sunday afternoon.

No one was injured when a private boat caught fire at the park around 4 p.m., said Lt. Randy Adams of Walla Walla Fire District 5. Officials believe it started in the boat’s engine compartment.

The grass fires that burned about 150 acres likely were sparked by a train that passed through the area, Adams said.

The fires did not threaten any buildings, he said.

A significant amount of smoke seen on the western horizon Sunday evening was from a fire near Mount Adams.
