Letter: Don't blame guns

July 15, 2014

Don't blame potatoes for your child's obesity and don't blame guns for murder.

If guns are so dangerous, why hasn't there been numerous shootings at gun shows?

Why does the president ignore the study that he authorized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on gun violence that found a 49 percent drop in homicide since 1993?

Why does he ignore a similar study by the Bureaus of Justice Statistics that found nonfatal gun crimes have dropped nearly 70 percent over the same time period?

Why does he ignore the CDC study that found that firearm-related death rates for youth ages 15 to 19 declined from 1994 to 2009?

Why does he ignore the studies' findings that pointed to the benefits of concealed firearm carry for protection against criminals?

Why does he ignore reports from the Bureau of Justice Statistics that reveal school shootings are not becoming the norm as he suggested?

Why do the media refuse to acknowledge the role of mind-altering psychotropic drugs in nearly every mass shooting in the last 20 years?

Why do 56 percent of Americans believe gun crime has increased, despite the massive plunge in gun crime? Could the media be responsible?
