Kim, Strankman lead area qualifiers at PNGA tournament

Scott Kim of Richland defeated Mark Brassey of Boise 1-up in the Round of 64 on Tuesday in the 113th Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman.

Kim, a and Hanford graduate and senior-to-be at Oregon State, trailed for much of the match until pulling even with Brassey with a par on the 17th hole.

Kim then parred No. 18 while Brassey took a bogey.

Nick Mandell of Kennewick lost to Clayton Madey of West Linn, Ore., 5 and 4. Mandell had two birdies and two bogies through 14 holes, but Madey made five birdies with just one bogey.

Kim will tee off at 8:10 a.m. against Madey.

Dillon Jahns of Othello fell to Frank Garber of Kirkland in 19 holes, and Lorenzo Cole of Richland lost to Hans Reimers of Lake Oswego 2-and-1.

Jahns, seeded 62nd, nearly pulled a major upset, leading for 15 of the 18 holes in a close match, but No. 3-ranked Garber won the 18th hole to pull even. Garber then birdied the first playoff hole (No. 1) for the win.

There was one major upset when No. 1 seeded Dale Brandt-Richards of Sydney, Australia, was beaten by Tye Gabriel of Portland 2-and-1.

In the PNGA Women’s Amateur tournament, Jalayne Martinez of Pasco, Kristin Strankman of Richland and Catherine Warner of Kennewick will all tee off today in the Round of 32.

Strankman, who shot a 74 in Round 2, tied for sixth in stroke play with a 153, nine strokes behind Aaren Ziegler of Canby. Warner shot a 79 on her second day and is tied for 15th heading into today at. Martinez finished 31st after coming in with a 175 for both days.

In match play today, Warner will tee off against Cali Hipp of Caldwell, Idaho, at 7:38 a.m. Martinez will take on No. 2-ranked Tyler Barker of Caldwell at 8:34 a.m. Strankman will battle Hannah Kim of Auburn at 9:22 a.m.

In the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, Tiffany Buissink of Pasco advanced to today’s Round of 16 with a two-day total of 170, 26 strokes behond leader Brie Stone of Veneta, Ore. Buissink will face Georgia Hutchinson of Sun Valley, Idaho at 9:46 a.m.

Sarah Michelson of Walla Walla did not advance past stroke play, finishing in a tie for 21st with 191.
