Department of Revenue warns businesses about scam

Tri-City HeraldJuly 2, 2014

The Washington State Department of Revenue is warning businesses about voice messages being left by scammers claiming to be a Revenue employee.

Once a person calls the tollfree number given by the scammer, he or she is asked to enter a code or hang up and dial an international number. The victim is then hit with phone charges.

The Department of Revenue does use an automated dialing system to contact business owners who have past due tax returns but never asks taxpayers to dial an international number or charges fees for calling.

The correct phone number is 800-631-4028. The number that scammers are using is similar to this actual tollfree number.

Check the Department of Revenue's website to confirm the correct number: http://dor.wa.gov/800. If contacted by a scammer, notify the Department of Revenue, the state Attorney General's Office and the Federal Trade Commission.
