Deadline for COBRA special enrollment is Tuesday

June 30, 2014

Washington residents covered under COBRA have a special enrollment window to apply for an insurance plan through the state's health insurance exchange. The deadline is today.

The special enrollment period follows a ruling from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that sets up a similar window for COBRA enrollees in states using the federal exchange, a news release said.

Open enrollment through Washington Healthplanfinder -- the state exchange's online marketplace -- for coverage taking effect this year ended a few months ago. The next open enrollment period starts in November, although people who experience certain life events -- such as having a baby -- can qualify for special enrollment periods.
