Phone scam used to gain access to personal computers

Tri-City HeraldJune 24, 2014

— Citizens in Kennewick have complained to authorities about a scam designed to get sensitive information from personal computers.

The citizens were contacted by someone claiming to be from Verizon Wireless, police said. The caller told citizens’ their computers were hacked and Verizon could help fix the problem.

The caller then got information from citizens to access their personal computer and personal information, police said. The caller also demanded cash be sent via Western Union or the computer would be damaged.

Police want to warn citizens about the scam and to be careful about giving personal information out over the phone.
