Suspect in attempted cellphone theft located with knife, drugs

KENNEWICK -- Police reportedly found a large knife and methamphetamine on a Kennewick man who allegedly tried to rob a group of juveniles.

The juveniles were near Fourth Avenue and Beech Street on Tuesday night when David Meraz tried to steal their cellphones, police said. The victims told police Meraz was armed with a knife and a gun.

Meraz was not able to get the phones and ran away, police said. A Benton County deputy found Meraz near Fifth Avenue and Date Street and arrested him.

Meraz had a large knife and what appeared to be the barrel of a gun, police said. He was also in possession of methamphetamine.

Meraz was booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery and possession of methamphetamine.
