Amon Natural Preserve: Save our wetlands

June 16, 2014

Did you know that Wellsian Way used to be wetland? As children we used to fish, catch tadpoles and learn the life cycle of a pond. Unfortunately, it was filled in during the '70s when our community was not thinking of preservation and so residents have lost that resource for the past 40+ years. It will be a similar loss to the community if the Amon Basin area is subjected to development, beginning with the proposed road and bridge to be built cross it. It will be the beginning of the end for yet another important wetland area.

We have precious few wetland areas left in the Tri-Cities; extending Rachel Road would forever damage this fragile natural classroom for children and adults alike. We urge the Richland City Council to be wise and intentional in preserving our wetlands for coming generations. Alas, is seems focused on short-sighted development and business consideration, losing sight of quality of life issues for residents.
