Letter: Gun violence

June 14, 2014

With another tragedy in our own backyard and in the Northwest, the drums of gun control again ramp up.

Here's something to think about: Guns have been around for a very long time, so what changed? Why so many incidents of gun violence in our country?

What changed is that we no longer have any respect for human life. Look at the number of pregnancies terminated in the name of choice. Teaching respect begins at home, then the schools and society. We've lost it.

Our society seems to be "me" centered. "My way or else" seems to be the mantra.

No, the debate doesn't need to be about gun laws. Heaven knows we have enough on the books already. People bent on death and destruction don't abide by the laws we have, so why pass more? The debate needs to be, "How do we instill respect for life and for one another?" I can disagree with you and still respect you. It can be done.
