Update: Krispy Kreme doughnut shops to open in Tri-City area

The Tri-Cities could be getting a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop as soon as next spring.

Tri-City entrepreneurs Scott and Crystal Carroll announced a franchise agreement with Krispy Kreme on Thursday that will allow the couple to open three doughnut shops in Benton, Franklin and Yakima counties in the next three years.

The Carrolls, the creators of MyFroYo frozen yogurt shops, haven’t identified specifically where the doughnut shops will be.

“We are in the process of looking for our first location,” Scott Carroll said. Right now, the closest Krispy Kreme doughnuts hail from Spokane, Seattle and Portland.

Scott Carroll said the couple want to bring something to the Tri-Cities area that their family, including five children, has enjoyed on out-of-town trips.

The reasoning is similar to why they decided to open the first of four MyFroYo frozen yogurt shops in the Tri-Cities in June 2010. The couple employ 20 to 50 people depending on the season, and still plan to grow and expand the MyFroYo brand.

Scott Carroll said they want to be able to offer the same sort of quality and fun family atmosphere at the doughnut shops that customers get when going to any MyFroYo shop.

Krispy Kreme’s famous doughnuts are made in front of those who plan to eat the decadent treats. They are available “hot off the presses if you want it that way” with a sign to alert passers-by to the fresh batch, he said. And they are economical for families with kids.

Tri-Citians have asked for a local Krispy Kreme operation. “There is such a huge following for their brand,” Scott Carroll said. Krispy Kreme has more than 260 U.S. shops, and about 160 of them are owner operated franchises.

Patricia Perry, Krispy Kreme’s vice president of domestic franchise development, said in a statement, “(Scott and Crystal Carroll) have demonstrated a history of success in the food service and sweet treats industry and possess thorough knowledge of the Washington area market.

And most importantly, they are passionate about growing the brand with us, and sharing the joy of Krispy Kreme with Washington area doughnut and coffee fans.”

The duo have spent about two years considering and planning the Krispy Kreme franchise, which is under CMC&A Foods LLC.

“Doughnuts and coffee, it doesn’t get more American than that,” Scott Carroll said.

The local shops will be able to set their own menus and won’t be limited as to what they can carry. While Krispy Kreme is known for its hot, glazed doughnuts and coffee, Scott Carroll said they have quite a variety, along with doughnuts that are available at certain times of the year.

Krispy Kreme has 42 different doughnut varieties listed on its website, including cake, glazed and filled doughnuts.

“We are going to give the people of the Tri-Cities as many options as we possibly can,” he said.

The couple love that Krispy Kreme has a history of giving back to the community, including with fundraising.

Once the Carrolls open their first shop, sports teams and other groups won’t need to go to Seattle or Spokane to buy Krispy Kreme doughnuts for fundraisers. Instead, Scott Carroll said, groups can buy the doughnuts locally or sell gift certificates people can use to pick up fresh doughnuts at the local shop.
