Legion baseball season gets started

Tri-City HeraldJune 1, 2014

There is no rest for the weary, or baseball players.

Just one day after the state high school baseball championships ended on Saturday, the Central Washington League — the toughest AAA American Legion baseball league in Washington state — began with a twinbill between the Hanford Flames and the Kennewick Bandits.

Over the next two months, eight teams will battle for postseason berths — each team will play 28 CWL contests.

Normally, the CWL gets four teams in the regionals, set for July 19-20 at various sites around the state. But this could be another year the league gets a fifth team, thanks to the Hanford Flames winning the state championship last year.

If you like good summer league baseball, this league is for you.

Here’s a quick look at each CWL team:

Apple Valley Packers — Wenatchee High just finished third in the 4A state tournament Saturday. Former Kamiakin standout Dustin Willis, who is the head coach at Wenatchee Valley Community College, is the Packers head coach.

Columbia Basin Spuds — The team is back for a second season in the CWL, and gets the majority of its players from Moses Lake. Big Bend’s Jameson Lange is the team’s head coach.

Hanford Flames — The defending senior American Legion state champions (AAA) have some talent returning. Mid-Columbia Conference player of the year Isaac Benard highlights the roster.

Kennewick Bandits — Gabe Boruff is the team’s new manager. He’s also the new coach for Columbia Basin College. While the Bandits recruit players from Kennewick and Southridge high schools – and have played their home games at Southridge High – the team will play its home games this season at CBC.

Pasco Sun Devils — Dave Price will run the senior program this season, and the squad will play the majority of its home games at Chiawana High.

Twin City Titans — Coach Dustin Snedigar takes the reins of this squad comprised mainly of Kamiakin and Richland high school players. The team plays its home games at Richland High.

Yakima Beetles — Shawn Thompson manages this team that consists mainly of players from Davis and Eisenhower high schools in Yakima. Games are played at Yakima Valley Community College.

Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak — Selah High coach Mike Archer returns for another season running the team, which is comprised of players from Ellensburg, Selah and West Valley High Schools mainly. The team plays its home games at Selah High.
