Grandmaster of Masons Bruce Vesper speaks to attendees Friday after a cornerstone ceremony at the new Trios Southridge Hospital in Kennewick.

During the ceremony, which is steeped in tradition and ritual, members of the state's Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons checked the cornerstone to ensure it was level, plumb and square. They also sprinkled it with corn, wine and oil, symbolizing plenty, joy and peace.

About three dozen Trios staffers and community members attended the ceremony. The public will have the chance to tour the new hospital on Saturday during an open house from noon to 6 p.m. It will be the only time the hospital will be open to the public before it officially debuts July 15.
