Two dump truck drivers killed in fiery Mattawa crash

May 28, 2014

Two Yakima-area dump truck drivers were killed Wednesday in a fiery head-on collision near Mattawa.

Grant County sheriff’s investigators said Bruce Patnode, 53, of Yakima, was heading north on Road O-SW in a dump truck hauling gravel about 9:30 a.m., said sheriff’s officials.

He crossed the centerline about four miles south of Mattawa and crashed into a southbound dump truck towing a dump trailer driven by Dale Peters, 45, of Selah.

Both men were thrown from their trucks and died.

The trucks burst into flames and had to be extinguished by Grant County Fire District 8, said officials.
