Pendleton prison on lockdown after small riot

— A Pendleton prison is on lockdown after a small riot among inmates erupted on Memorial Day.

Multiple fights broke out in the dining room of Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution during dinner time, prison officials said. Staff were able to break up the fights and the west side of the prison was placed on lockdown. .

However, more fights between inmates broke out and officials decided to put the entire prison on lockdown, officials said.

A Total of 46 inmates were put into special housing for their roles in the riot, officials said. At least one inmate received medical treatment outside the prison.

All visitation at the prison has been canceled until further notice. An investigation is ongoing to determine what started the fights.

The medium-security prison houses 1,700 male inmates.
