Tennis: MCC boys rule regionals, Kennewick girls win title

The Mid-Columbia Con-ference did well at the 3A regional tennis tournament in Spokane on Saturday, earning all six berths to state for the boys and two more for the girls.

Hanford’s boys and Kennewick’s girls took the regional team trophies.

Hanford’s Darko Stankovic beat his teammate, Cyrus Stephens, in the boys single final 6-1, 6-2, as both players qualified for next weekend 3A state tournament set for Kamiakin High School and the Tri-City Court Club.

Southridge’s Ethan Ling grabbed the third single berth with a 6-4, 6-3 win over University’s Kyle Smithgall.

Kennewick’s Chad McKenzie and Jared Bolt beat Kamiakin’s Ben Welch and Matt Inman 6-3, 6-2 for the 3A boys doubles title.

Hanford's doubles team of Sean and Will Thompson won the third-place match to qualify for state too.

In 3A girls play, Kennewick’s Stephanie Buckingham beat Shadle Park’s Audra Spargo 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 in the girls singles title match.

In the 3A girls doubles championship, Southridge’s Bailee Sanderson and Sofia Morrison defeated Univer-sity’s Rilee Skidmore and Katelyn Schmidt 6-1, 6-2.

In the 4A tournament, also in Spokane, Chiawana’s Paul Chapuis took the second state tournament berth in boys singles.

Richland’s boys doubles team of Zach Fisher and Trent Prussing bounced back from losing the title match to clinch the second state berth.

The Greater Spokane League took all four available girls state berths.

2A CWAC DISTRICT: Prosser’s Daphne Reilly lost the girls singles title match 6-0, 6-0 to West Valley’s Chloe Goyette, but by placing second at the district tournament, Reilly qualified for next week’s 2A state tournament at the University of Washington.

Othello’s Keestan Anderson also qualified in girls singles play by taking the third-place match.

Othello’s Gabe Harris and Michael Carlton qualified for the state tournament in boys doubles by placing third.

1A SCAC DISTRICT: Connell’s Patrick Hadley finished fourth in boys singles to earn a state tournament berth at the SCAC district tournament at Sunnyside High School.

Hadley was the only Mid-Columbia to qualify for the state tournament, as :La Salle’s boys and girls dominated the tournament.

The Columbia-Burbank boys doubles team of Tanner Butler and Cesar Castaneda qualified as an alternate team.
