Softball: River View stuns top-seeded Zillah

May 22, 2014

Kaylee Lozier was sharp in the circle as the River View softball team upset Zillah 5-3 on Thursday in the opening round of the Class 1A District 5 tournament in Zillah.

The Panthers, who entered as the No. 4 seed from the SCAC East, upset the SCAC West’s top seed and moved one win from the state tournament.

“Our pitching coach (Chani Brisby) called a good game, and (Lozier) executed,” River View coach Andy Clayton said. “The defense played pretty solid behind her and she had three, three-and-out innings. She held them at bay.”

Offensively, Jessica Burrus was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, while Kylie Sakota and Lizzy Vasquez added RBIs.

“We put the ball on the ground, bunted the ball and did some small ball to move the runners around,” Clayton said. “For the most part, we were putting pressure on them.”

The win comes on the heels of two blowout wins for Warden over Cle Elum/Roslyn last Saturday.

“It was a good game for us,” Warden coach Wes Richins said. “Their pitcher mixes it around a lot. She didn’t walk us and kept us off balance for awhile. It was a good game to be kind of tight.”
