Soccer: Othello wins state opener

May 21, 2014

Coming into state as the No. 4 seed out of the CWAC, the Othello soccer team put together one of its best efforts of the season Wednesday and knocked off the defending state champs on the road.

Gus Roa scored the game’s only goal a minute before halftime, and keeper Angel Rangel made it stand up with nine saves as the Huskies downed Cheney 1-0.

Othello will host Toppenish at 1 p.m. Saturday with a trip to the semifinals at stake.

Roa’s goal came after Hugo Martinez drove up the right side on a breakaway, sending the ball down into the right corner. Roa got control, slipped past the defense and then chipped the ball over the goalie.

A big part of Othello’s win came from midfielders Jason Rodriguez and Jacob Quiroz, who marked Cheney’s top player and kept him from being a factor.

Scoring—1, O, Gus Roa (Hugo Martinez) 39th. Shots—Othello 11, Cheney 9. Saves—Othello, Angel Rangel 9. Cheney, Ruvim Tuezuda 7.
