Soccer: Sunnyside opens state with victory

May 20, 2014

Sunnyside played a strong defensive game, shutting down visiting Auburn Mountainview 1-0 in a first-round Class 3A state tournament match Tuesday in Sunnyside.

Noe Meza collected a Joel Flores pass from the corner in the 60th minute, and he sent the ball past AM keeper Nick Hytrek for the game’s only goal.

“It was a hard-fought match,” said Sunnyside assistant coach Daniel Licona. “We just decided to finish it. Defensively, Jacob Meza did an excellent job, and he’s done that through the year. He‘s just awesome.”

The Grizzlies will host a Class 3A quarterfinal match at 1 p.m. Saturday against Kennewick.

Scoring—1, S, Noe Meza (Joel Flores), 60:00. Shots—AM 6, Sun 13. Saves—AM, Nick Hytrek, 5. Sun, Manuel Calvillo 3.
