CBC, Walla Walla baseball keep seasons alive

May 16, 2014

Jacob Gleichman pitched a complete game, striking out four as the Columbia Basin College baseball team kept its season alive with a 5-2 victory Friday over Yakima Valley in an NWAACC East elimination game in Ontario, Ore.

The Hawks lost their opener Friday to host Treasure Valley, 3-2 to knock them into the consolation bracket.

“He was really lights out for us all day,” CBC coach Scott Rogers said of Gleichman. “He managed to pitch around his (nine hits), by pounding the zone and throwing strikes.”

CBC will face Walla Walla at noon today with a berth to the NWAACC tournament on the line. The loser’s season is over.

Against Yakima Valley, the game was tied at 2-2 heading into the eighth inning when Ryan Atkinson blasted a solo homer to make it 3-2. Nick Savas and Tucker Ibabao followed with RBI singles to make it 5-2. Dalton Johnson homered earlier in the game as well.

In the opener, the Hawks chose to use their bullpen to save their top starters for potential elimination games later in the weekend.

The reverse lock almost worked, as Elliot Mendenhall threw five strong innings, allowing two earned runs. Evan Harder then threw three shutout innings of relief, striking out five and walking none.

“We could not ask for more than we got from the two pitchers in that game,” Rogers said. “They were lights out. They were good enough to win, unfortunately we went against Treasure Valley’s ace. We had opportunity’s just didn’t cash in.”
