Letter: Don't report suicides

May 11, 2014

I read an article in the May 7 Herald that stated, "3 recent deaths were ruled suicides." I think this was unnecessary and distasteful. That's not news. That's just a detail or circumstance.

I can only imagine that it's hard enough for the family to have to deal with the death and I'm sure that other family and close friends were already told this (or maybe not), but for it to be told to the public is insensitive.

A spouse or parent is surely feeling the hurt, maybe shame and possibly guilt when someone takes his or her own life, but for them to now have to face everyone who knew the deceased can be overwhelming. Go ahead, if you must, and state the fact that they were suicides, but there was no need to mention the names. Come on, Herald, have a heart!
