In Focus: Leadership Tri-Cities— join the team

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Leadership Tri-Cities, with the search for members of Class XX under way. The application and interview process will produce a diverse team representing a cross-section of our community to serve as the next wave of leaders. Leadership Tri-Cities is an unparalleled education and leadership development program that focuses on opportunities and challenges existing within our community. Applications are due May 16, and the 11-month program kicks off in August. Class members participate in full-day seminars, service projects, discussion groups and conversations with prominent regional leaders. Ten sessions explore and examine different sectors of our community, focusing on agriculture, human needs and services, economic development, law enforcement and the justice system, medical and health services, local and state government, education, arts and entertainment and the Hanford site. These experiences produce knowledgeable leaders who serve the Tri-Cities during the class year and beyond. Members of each class also select a service project to complete during their year. These projects encompass leadership practices, taking learned concepts and putting them into action. Class projects have improved many aspects of our community. Past classes have renovated the Columbia Basin Domestic Violence Safe House, created a library for The Children’s Reading Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club, and raised community awareness about mental illness in partnership with the Tri-Cities chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness, to name only a few. Leadership Tri-Cities is a not-for-profit organization. Now operating for two decades, the board of directors is made up exclusively of LTC graduates. More than 450 leaders have graduated from the program. That is a significant number. If Leadership Tri-Cities was a business, it would rank in the top 20 of major Tri-City employers. Class graduates can be seen throughout the community, many on city, school and foundation boards, while others provide their leadership behind the scenes. All continue to enhance the Tri-Cities through service, leading and influencing in countless ways. As described by Malcolm Gladwell in his acclaimed work The Tipping Point, three types of people are needed to make substantive change — connectors, mavens and salespeople. All can be found in Leadership Tri-Cities alumni. Graduates are action-minded, help push the boundaries, do the hard work and continue to help solve community challenges. They are particularly well-connected and trusted by their peers and, through the program, they become fluent in our community and what really drives progress. We know the quality of our leadership will determine the future of our community. By combining leaders with community challenges, graduates of Leadership Tri-Cities will ensure the organization continues to make a positive difference for the next 20 years.
