Letter: Legalized marijuana bad for children

May 8, 2014

I am crying out to our lawmakers to take in the whole picture of the negativity affecting our children because state voters legalized marijuana.

New research published in the Journal of Neuroscience has determined smoking pot just a few times a week physically alters critical neural structures in the brain; young users could be permanently damaging their still-developing minds.

Marijuana has always been known as a gateway drug, leading to other drugs. We need to look at the consequences that lie ahead for our children's sake and our country.

I am wondering if our leaders are aware of recent news where two 9-year-old children were selling marijuana at school in the state of Colorado. Is this taking place in Washington as well?

Please, we need to protect our children from damaging their futures.
