In his first start this season, JD Page struck out six and allowed one earned run in leading Columbia Basin College to a 12-2 victory Wednesday in the first game of its NWAACC East doubleheader against Big Bend Community College in Pasco.

“JD might have given us one of our better performances this season,” said CBC coach Scott Rogers. “He has been pitching put of the bullpen. He was in complete control. Despite his protest, we took him out after 97 pitches. We want him healthy for next week.”

The Hawks won the second game 7-6 in 12 innings, getting a little help from the Vikings along the way.

“The second game went back and forth all game long,” Rogers said. “There were several opportunities for both teams from the eighth inning on, but no one could seem to make anything happen.”

Hawks changed that in the bottom of the 12th.

Nick Savas drew a one-out walk, then went to second on a ball in the dirt. The Big Bend catcher threw to second, where the ball bounced off Savas and into the outfield. He continued on to third.

With two outs, Dalton Johnson sent Savas across the plate with an infield single for the winning run.

Kenton Brunson had a triple and three RBIs for the Hawks, while Stetson Plew picked up the win, pitching the final 71⁄3 innings in relief.

“To get that second (win) showed some resiliency and competitiveness,” Rogers. “I was proud of what they did today.”

The Hawks are 15-11 in East region play and have the inside edge on the No. 4 spot for the playoffs.
