Boys soccer: Kennewick closes regular season with win over Southridge

Ramiro Chavez scored the game-tying goal with two minutes left in regulation and then tallied the game-winner on a penalty kick in double overtime to lift the Kennewick boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Southridge in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Daniel Mendoza put Southridge on the board in the 25th minute, scoring off an assist from Tony Nava. That 1-0 lead held up for the next 53 minutes before Chavez took a pass from Federico Villasenor and beat Suns goalie Chandler Ruggieri for the equalizer.

“It was certainly not the best finishing night for us. Southridge pushed us to the brink, but we were able to salvage a win,” Kennewick coach Brian Gochoel said after the Lions outshot Southridge 17-4. “Hopefully tonight was an opportunity to refocus our sights on our first playoff game next week.”

Kennewick will be the No. 3 seed in the District 5/8 sub-regional playoffs beginning Saturday.

Kamiakin 2, Hanford 1: Jose Anguino had a goal and an assist as the Braves upset the Falcons in a Mid-Columbia Conference match in Richland.

Alex Sotelo scored the game-winner in the 47th minute for Kamiakin.

Walla Walla 2, Richland 1: The Blue Devils advanced in the District 5 playoffs, eliminating the Bombers in a rematch of last year’s district championship game.

Walla Walla will travel to Chiawana at 7 p.m. Thursday in Pasco.

Davis 1, Sunnyside 0 (SO): Lupe Garnaeras and Jose Marquez scored in the shootout, but it

wasn’t enough as the Grizzlies dropped a CBBN match to the Pirates.

Grandview 2, East Valley 1: Alexis Correa’s kick got hung up in the wind and ended up in the back of the net in the 72nd minute to give the Greyhounds a win over East Valley in Moxee and their first league title since 2008.

Grandview, which finished league play undefeated at 9-0, will have a bye in Saturday’s first round of the district tournement. The Greyhounds will host a district game next Tuesday.

Victor Valencia also scored for Grandview, while Antonio Garcia had two saves on a very windy day.

Wahluke 2, Royal 0: Ramon Bravo scored his team-high 14th goal to anchor the Warriors’ SCAC East win in the regular-season finale.

Wahluke goalkeeper Alan Caro made 10 saves to earn the shutout.
