Letter: Minimum wage

May 3, 2014

Is raising the minimum wage in Seattle a smart idea? Or should it not happen? Raising minimum wage is a very smart idea for the city of Seattle. Seattle is a big city with expensive living costs.

Many people in the city of Seattle only work for minimum wage, which is about $9.32 an hour. Most of them are barely able make their payments for housing. If the city of Seattle were to raise minimum wage to $15 an hour, it would help with the cost of living and transportation. There are many students who live in the city of Seattle.

Students of Seattle have more expenses to cover. As a college student, they have to cover the cost of tuition, housing, food, books and transportation.

At colleges in Seattle, tuition alone is from $11,000 to $32,000. Therefore, college students would have to cover the costs of living with two or three minimum-wage jobs. If the minimum wage was $15 an hour, they would only have to work one job and not stress as much. Increasing minimum wage would help students and families of those students.
