Soccer: Grandview wins first CWAC title since 2008

May 1, 2014

Senior Fabian Lua scored the deciding goal in the shootout and Grandview wrapped up its first CWAC title since 2008, beating visiting Toppenish 1-0 in a shootout.

Grandview (8-0) has one game left, while Toppenish (6-1) has two. Even if they should finish with the same record, the Greyhounds own the tiebreaker. Freshman goalie Antonio Garcia had five saves in regulation and has allowed just three goals this season.

“About 12 to 15 minutes into the match, Toppenish was awarded a penalty kick and he saved it,” said Grandview coach Anne Holden. “It (the game) could have been gone right there.”

Carlos Ramos, Alvaro Flores and Victor Valencia also scored in the shootout for Grandview, which celebrated senior night.

“The whole 2008 team was there tonight, and seven guys from last year’s team,” Holden said. “That was fantastic. I didn’t know anything about it.”
