Softball: Central Washington tops Western in GNAC tourney

May 1, 2014

Western Washington’s Autumn Isaacson slides under the tag of Central Washington second baseman Taylor Ferleman on Thursday during the Great Northwest Athletic Conference NCAA Division II softball tournament at Columbia Playfield in Richland. Central won 8-7.

A two-out, two-run home run by Michaela Hazlett helped Central Washington knock off Western Washington 8-7 in the first round of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference tournament Thursday at Columbia Playfield in Richland.

Walla Walla High graduate Andrea Hamada singled and scored on Hazlett’s blast, which helped the Wildcats (28-16) advance to Friday’s semifinals for the NCAA Division II league. Central Washington will play Western Oregon (31-20) at 2 p.m., while WWU (30-13) will play Saint Martin’s (26-21) at 4:30 p.m.

Central erased an early 1-0 lead, scoring twice in the second and four times in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Walla Walla grad Jill McDaniels scored in the second, as the Wildcats took advantage of three Vikings errors.

Western rallied, though, scoring once in the third and five times in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead.

But Central had the last laugh thanks to Hazlett’s home run.

Autumn Isaacson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and stole her GNAC-record 31st base for Western.

Western Oregon 3, Saint Martin’s 1: Jourdan Williams hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the eighth inning to send the Wolves into today’s semifinals.

Western Oregon tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a double by Melanie Pfeiffer, scoring Danielle Hannan.
