Pasco mother dies in childbirth

Instead of celebrating Ana Lilia Gutierrez's birthday Wednesday, relatives and friends were mourning the death of the Pasco woman who died giving birth to her sixth child.

Gutierrez 37, died Saturday at Kadlec Regional Medical Center. Her newborn, Raul Gutierrez Jr., named for his father, Raul, survived after an emergency caesarean section.

The Pasco High graduate was originally from Mexico and had lived in the Tri-Cities for 21 years. She enjoyed reading, taking photos, dancing and singing, said her family.

A family friend, Ashlyn Surgeon, has set up a donation site at to cover funeral and other expenses. As of Wednesday, 475 people had pledged $15,550.

Kadlec spokesman Jim Hall said Gutierrez experienced a headache and nausea during delivery. Nurses and physicians worked diligently, but could not revive her.

He called it an extremely rare occurrence in hospital delivery rooms.

Benton County Coroner John Hansens said the hospital is doing an autopsy after consulting with him but lab results aren't due for several weeks.

Mueller's Greenlee Funeral Home in Pasco is handling her services. A visitation and rosary are planned today. Services are Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Pasco.
