Letter: Be safe this summer

April 30, 2014

As coordinator for Safe Kids Benton-Franklin, I would like to thank the Tri-City Herald for the excellent editorial on April 15 about summer safety and to remind our community of local resources for keeping everyone safe.

Helmets are available at Richland Parks and Recreation, 500 Amon Park Drive and Kennewick Parks and Recreation, 2901 Southridge Blvd. Donations are requested -- $8 for bike helmets and $10 for multi-sport helmets -- but no one will be turned away because he or she can't pay.

Life jacket loan boards are at nine parks and boat ramps in Benton and Franklin counties. Borrow a jacket before heading out on the water and return it when you are done. Or stop by Richland or Kennewick park departments or Benton County Fire District No. 4, 2604 Bombing Range Road, in West Richland and borrow it on your way.

No matter where you are headed, ensure that everyone is buckled up correctly. Free car seat and booster seat checks are performed the second Wednesday of every month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 509 734-7029 to make an appointment.

For more information on these programs or any other safety issues, please contact Safe Kids Benton-Franklin at 509 460-4216 or email kathleencc@bfhd.wa.gov.

Tri-City Herald is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
