Sunnyside student raising money to go to track meet in Australia

By The Tri-City HeraldApril 29, 2014

A Sunnyside High School senior is organizing a 5K run scheduled for Saturday to raise money so he can attend a track meet in Australia.

Elijah Pena has competed at the state level and competed in hurdles and the long jump, a release said. He was selected for the Down Under Track & Field Meet based on his past athletic performance.

Elijah has had a few other fundraisers to collect the money needed to attend and participate in the July meet. However, his goal is to raise another $5,000 by June 2 so at least one of his parents may attend with him.

The 5K will be at 7:30 a.m. at Sunnyside High with check-in at 7 a.m. Cost is $30 and can be paid when runners show up or ahead of time at Lower Valley Credit Union. People who register early may order a T-shirt, but a few extras will be available the day of the race.

For more information or to sponsor Elijah, call 509-391-9816 or 509-837-6034.
