Richland — There will be plenty of dancin' in the streets when the Tri-City youth choir Forte presents its spring show May 9 in the auditorium at Chief Joseph Middle School in Richland.
"This show started with a list of about 95 pop songs that I assembled over a few months -- songs I personally liked from the past," said Forte director Heather Hull Hart.
Those songs include Dancin' in the Street by Martha and the Vandellas, September by Earth Wind & Fire, Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder, Don't Be Cruel by Elvis Presley, Walking on Sunshine by Katrina & the Waves, Puttin on the Ritz by Fred Astaire, Home by Phillip Phillips, and Viva la Vida by Coldplay.
Hart said she was originally going to call the show Let's Dance but changed her mind after talking with her choreographer Marlie Buriak.
"There's no script to follow or published concert plan," Hart said. "Our show was created from our heads."
And the Martha and the Vandellas' hit Motown song, Dancin' in the Street, seemed like a better title for the show, she added.
The show will open with half the choir sitting casually at an outdoor cafe while the other half strolls in wearing office attire, heads down as they feverishly work their iPads and phones, weighed down with computer bags.
"The entire show takes place on this street in front of an imaginary cafe where people come and go throughout the day and stop what they are doing to realize their dream or desire to sing and dance," Hart said.
Hart adds that the show is a big change from Forte's usual shows.
"We usually prepare eight or nine choreographed songs with a few vocal solos and small ensemble," she said. "However, for this show we have stretched our members to participate in all 14 songs, even the solo pieces. And, Marlie Buriak brings to us her expertise in tap, ballet and musical theater choreography."
Showtimes are 7 p.m. May 9 and 2 and 7 p.m. May 10 at Chief Joseph, 504 Wilson Ave., Richland. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors.
