Letter: KID water no bargain

April 28, 2014

For those who think Kennewick Irrigation District water is a bargain, I offer the following: I used to live in north Richland on a lot the same size as the one where I live now in south Richland.

In north Richland, I used city water for irrigation. City records show that in the years '97 to '03, I used between 40,200 and 25,500 cubic feet of water from April 15 to Oct. 15. Today, Richland charges 95 cents per 100 cubic feet of water. Using this rate, I would pay between $381.90 and $242.25 for irrigation water. Yet, I pay KID $416.22.

KID water is not only expensive, it's also dirty and unreliable. I think KID costs and service would change if people were allowed to choose whether to use city water or KID water. Either that, or they'd go out of business.

Isn't it time for KID users to rise up in mass and demand a choice if we can't get better service at a lower cost?
