The April 18 article in the Herald about coal making a comeback, said the global outlook for coal is bright. Not true, because coal, when burned, emits CO2. At 400 parts per million, CO2 is higher now than ever in human history. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change just reported, Warming of the climate system is unequivocal ... observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. I urge you to at least read the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Summary for Policy Makers (tinyurl.com/TCH-IPCC). This report is comprehensively researched, meticulously reviewed, carefully written and explains in stark detail what is happening, why, and what consequences are likely. Coal is the worlds dirtiest energy to mine, transport, burn and dispose of. It adds millions of tons of CO2 to the Earths atmosphere. The Herald says that outlook for coal means a bright future? Nonsense. We are the first generation to know that we are a large cause of climate change. We will be the last generation able to change that.
