Sun Downs: General Day wins mixed race

April 26, 2014

General Day, a 6-year-old gelding ridden by Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa, set a Sun Downs track record at the unusual distance of 880 yards Saturday in the featured Sun Downs Mixed Breed Horsemen’s Memorial.

General Day, which was claimed for $5,000 by Kennewick’s Jackie Smith at Portland Meadows on Jan. 26, earned his fourth consecutive victory.

And this one came with ease, as he steadily pulled away for the win — beating runnerup Churchbob by 51⁄4 lengths.

He finished the race in 45.56 seconds, setting a new mark at that distance at Sun Downs. The old track record was 45.6 seconds, held by Policy Bayou back in 1993.

In other highlights, jockeys Pablo Madrigal and Jesus Alfanador each had two wins on the day’s seven-race card, as did trainer Billy Christian and owner Nancy Hoff.

The Christian-Hoff tandem earned victories from Carrow the Sparrow in the fourth (with Madrigal aboard) and Dee Rain (with Alfanador riding) in the seventh. Both were claiming races.

A smaller card Saturday results in a smaller handle, which was $28,081.

Seven more races are scheduled for today, with the first post going off at 1 p.m.

Today’s featured race (estimated start is 3:05 p.m.) is the $4,700 Bill Kelly Memorial Quarter Horse Derby at 350 yards.

The pre-race favorite is Angel Eyez, a 3-year-old filly trained by Boardman’s Hector Magallanes. She has won three of her last four races.

Today will also mark the return of the Sun Downs doggie races. Anyone can enter their pooch today to race in front of the grandstand. To enter, bring your dog to the track and contact the race office on the main floor of the grandstand.

The dog races are scheduled to run at 3 p.m.

Trey Fecta

Another rough day at the track for Trey, who lost $44.

That drops the imaginary bankroll — which started at $300 this meet — down to $159.70.

We remain undaunted today.

In today’s first race, we’re picking Cias’ Dancer for the first half of the Daily Double, then boxing an exacta with her and Buckaree.

We’ll take Morn n’ At Last for the second half of the Daily Double in the second race. We’ll also do a $3 quinella with her and Mrs Jonesy and Me.

In the third, we like a trifecta box of Junos Hotshot, Kippa Zoomer and Letsgokachingkaching.

It’s $10 to win on Fastest in the fourth, and a Sammartino, Silent Punch and Guzzlingin trifecta box in the fifth.

For the sixth race Bill Kelly Memorial special, it’s Angel Eyez for the first half of the Late Daily Double, and an Angel Eyez-Bh Country Chrome exacta box.

Finally, it’s Mamoonya for the second half of the Late Double in the seventh, and $5 across the board on Mamoonya.

That’s $66 in wagers.
