Food for Thought: Spring Barrel Tasting planned this weekend across Mid-Columbia

Forty wineries from Richland to Yakima will celebrate Spring Barrel Tasting on April 25-27.

Tulips are blooming, a sure sign winemakers up and down the Yakima Valley are ready to release their newest vintages.

In celebration, wineries are throwing open their doors and wine cellars for the annual Spring Barrel Tasting weekend, which begins Friday and runs through Sunday. It's an excellent time to get out and sample some wines, including those still aging in the barrel.

Many of the wineries will have special discounts for wine purchases, appetizers to sample and entertainment.

The wineries generally will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some will charge for tasting, though they normally waive it if you make a purchase.

Premier passes, which get you extra goodies to eat and sip and tours not generally available, will be sold at several wineries. Cost is $35. Find the full list at wineyakimavalley.org.

Members of the White Bluffs Quilt Museum in Richland will hold their annual Mother's Day Apple Pie Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10.

The sale will be held at Yoke's Fresh Market on Bombing Range Road in West Richland. The pies are sold "ready to bake" and made as you watch using fresh local ingredients.

The White Bluffs Quilt Museum is a regional textile arts center, serving the Tri-Cities and the Mid-Columbia. The center serves as a museum and a support organization for the quilting, weaving, spinning and basketry groups.

Proceeds from the pie sale will help pay for a summer Textile Arts Program for children that offers classes in sewing, quilting, basketry, jewelry, weaving and other crafts.

The Yakima Valley Community College's vineyard and winery also will be open during Spring Barrel Tasting. Samples of the college's award-winning wines will be poured in the tasting room from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Students will give tours of the facility and man several educational stations, including a wine sensory table and a food and wine pairing table.

The student club also will sell cut wine barrels for planters.

The tasting room is at 114 Grandridge Road in Grandview.
