Madrigal off to fast start at Sun Downs

By Jeff Morrow, Herald sports editorApril 19, 2014

It was a great start to the Sun Downs horse racing meet for jockey Pablo Madrigal, who won four of the eight races in the opening card at the Kennewick track on Saturday.

That included the last three races of the day, including the $2,100 Boeknoogen Memorial at 250 yards.

In that race, Madrigal rode La Jackye to victory with a clean start. Taking off from the 2 spot, the horses on either side of them stumbled away, leaving Madrigal and his horse a clean path.

“(Horses) usually make mistakes in that short of a race,” said Madrigal. “(La Jackye) could get better.”

Catlow Rim and jockey Tad Wayne Skaggs came on hard at the end from the outside, but they could not catch La Jackye.

Madrigal said before Saturday, he had only galloped La Jackye on a track.

“She’s really good,” he said.

The day began with sunny weather, bringing out a solid crowd of roughly 1,000 fans who wagered a total handle of $48,285.

Saturday also marked the Dick Monahan/AQHA Maiden Challenge trials, and Hyho Travio with rider Eduardo Gutierrez-Sosa was the fastest qualifier at 18.32 seconds.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will advance to the finals on May 3.

Today’s 10-race card will feature five Pot O’Gold Futurity trials and two Sun Downs/Meriel Distaff Challenge trials.

First post today is at 1 p.m.

Thanks to hitting an exacta in the eighth race, Saturday wasn’t a total disaster for Trey.

The net loss was $11.30, bringing the imaginary bankroll of $300 down to $288.70.

For today, in the first we’ll take Camp Pendleton for the first half of the Daily Double, and a quinella with Freedomslastknight.

We’re taking Chicks R Gone for the second half of the Daily Double in the second race, and boxing it for a trifecta with A Tree Dash and Silvies.

In the third, it’s a $5 quinella of Diva B Gone and L Bar D Sweet Fantsy.

For the fourth, we’re placing $5 to win on Divil.

We’re placing $5 across the board on Seperatefromdarest in the fifth.

In the sixth, it’s $5 to win on Quematierras.

We like a $5 quinella on Impulzive Kate and Miss Fun Run in the seventh, and we’ll box an exacta on Righteous Look and The Streakin Clean in the eighth.

In the ninth, we like Ms Eaves for the first half of the late double, and we’ll box a trifecta of her with One Famous Strawfly and Chicks Special Angel.

In the 10th, Pinotman gets the nod for the second half of the Late Double, and we’ll go with $5 across the board on him.

That’s $85 in wagers.
