Whitstran man's death near Benton City canal was accidental, coroner says

Tri-City HeraldApril 17, 2014

The death of a Whitstran man whose body was found Wednesday in a canal near Benton City was likely an accident, according to the Benton County coroner.

Officials did not conduct an autopsy on Alvaro Lopez-Ivarra, 31, said Coroner John Hansens, though they collected samples for a toxicology report.

Hansens said he wouldn't have an official cause of death until after the toxicology results are back, but evidence points to Lopez-Ivarra's drowning being accidental.

Lopez-Ivarra walked away from a house near the canal Tuesday, officials said. Friends were out looking for him Wednesday when his body was found.

Officials estimated his body had been in the water between eight and 12 hours.
