Richland Rotarian wins cruise in fundraiser for humanitarian trips

By the Herald staffApril 17, 2014

Patricia Haggerty, a member of the Richland Rotary Club, won an Alaska cruise for two in a drawing to support Dr. Jim Guzek's work in Ethiopia.

Guzek is a cataract surgeon at Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute in Kennewick, and he makes regular humanitarian trips to Ethiopia to run cataract clinics. He and a team recently returned from a trip.

Tri-Cities Sunrise Rotary and the AAA Kennewick office organized the drawing. More than 570 tickets -- priced at $50 -- were sold in the community, raising enough to restore vision to 700 people in rural Ethiopia blinded by cataracts, a news release said. To learn more about Guzek's work or donate, go to www.giftingsight.org.
